This was a special shoot contracted by the City of Houghton to be used for tourism promotion of Houghton and the Keweenaw. The panorama was shot from the south tour of the Portage Lift Bridge, 180 ft above the water.
Houghton is one of the best 100 places to live, according to “The 100 Best Small Towns In America,” by Norman Crampton. Situated on the hills bordering the beautiful Portage Waterway, Houghton offers a bounty of recreational opportunities all year long. Our renowned waterfront provides adventure and relaxation for a multitude of interests and is supplemented by various neighborhood parks and trails.
An abundance of free parking and docking ensures easy access to public utilities, lodging facilities and restaurants. For current events and a listing of businesses, visit the Downtown Houghton website.
About the Panorama
This panorama was shot from over 200 16MP images resulting in a 1.01 Gigapixel (1003 megapixel) image. The panorama was shot with a 55mm lens due to the movement of the bridge. I had originally planned on using a 200mm (focal length of 300mm) but the movement of the bridge blurred images too much. The overall dimensions of the image is 71168 px by 14110 px resulting in an image that could be printed 30ft long and high enough quality to be viewed within inches. The panorama was shot September 27, 2012 at about 9:30am.
Enjoy the amazing view with a print on your wall. Standard prints are available in the Shop. In addition, I can create a print from any view in the interactive panorama. If there’s a specific view you like, it can be printed.
Below is the interactive panorama allowing you to look around and zoom in. The software requires Silverlight so it won’t work on mobile phones. If you are viewing from a phone, make sure you like our Facebook page so you can find it on the computer.
